Education

The education in the field of Sustainable Development in the Built Environment at the Faculty of Architecture is in relation to the approach taken by the Executive Board of TU Delft to be understood as the teaching of an attitude (culture change). In education it is important to inspire and challenge, this creates involvement. This starts with the invitation of (known) designers with a vision for Smart / Sustainable architecture and urban design and a good embedding of sustainable development in the built environment as a design discipline in education, namely through understanding, applying and analysing during the Bachelor education and through synthesising and evaluating during the Master Program. For an architect sustainable design should be part of the trade.

Firstly, the student can develop his or her vision by wondering, what do I find to be sustainable about my design? Secondly one can use examples to explain the social and technical options available to an architect. Then, by using precedents (examples, concepts, architects) clarify what sustainable design really entails.

The Bachelor Program is an excellent place for inspiration, appealing projects and designers, plan analysis of sustainable examples, design support in the field of Sustainable Development in the Built Environment and providing knowledge by use sustainability databases. The amassed knowledge of innovative and inspiring examples of building are essential to encourage the young students. It is therefore important to meet the challenges that Sustainable Development has to offer.

The Master Program provides depth and insight. The design education focuses on time-based Architecture, non-western programs and the relationship between context and concept. The courses discuss the concepts Planet, People and Green Architecture.

Inspired by the motto "Design driven research" innovations arise through integrated design, using a desirable future to look back on what could now be sustainable architecture or urban planning.

There are many interpretations of sustainability, cultural sustainability, build for eternity, healthy housing, urban agriculture. It is important that a research group keeps watchful eye on things and carefully scrutinises developing ideas and concepts. The given diversity of possible solutions provides the best approach for inspiring education.
